Take youth at risk, teach them construction skills, and help them finish their high school education. Then help them find a job and follow-up for a year. This is the mission of YouthBuild USA , a nonprofit with more than 200 locations around the country. With major funding from the US Department of Labor, this 25-year-old organization needed a website for their Shades of Green initiative. Not only do these young people learn construction skills, they learn green skills to increase their employability.
Learn green. Get a job.
The website provides an online resource for YouthBuild grantees to access current green building standards and resources. Based on a book YouthBuild published, we took the content to the web, added video, links to other government resources (such as Energy Star), and incorporated success stories from other YouthBuild sites.
Tools for onsite support.
A series of tools were also created to post on the “Toolbench” portion of the site. We designed well-branded instructional flyers, downloadable as pdfs, that focused on the basics of green building with such topics as:
- Insulating and air sealing the attic
- Green certification programs
- Using tankless water heaters
- Solar panel installation considerations
- Running a blower door test
We worked in conjunction with Mary Duffy & Associates on this project.
