We were thrilled when the American Society of Landscape Architects wanted to build a web component on their site for middle school students, grades 6-8. The green roof on the headquarters of ASLA in Washington DC was used as the basis for the site. The Roof is Growing website explains the environmental benefits, and what a landscape architect is. There is also a section with teacher resources, lesson plans, and a 360 degree guided tour of the roof.
A top down approach.
This was one of those very fun projects that comes along. We were excited about both the content and the audience. A fun palette of colors combined with lots of interesting elements resulted in a site that engages the 12-14 year old age group.
The instructional materials for the teachers and the student workbook are all available to download in pdf format on the site. Students can even sign up for a field trip to explore the roof.
We also built an interactive e-learning tool to walk students through the benefits of the roof in detail. Watch the presentation.
Pat on the back.
Congratulations are in order to ASLA for their 2011 Webby Award. Good job.
